Give a Book. Change a Life.

Community Outreach@rtp will be running a book drive from April 19 to May 15, and we need your new and gently used children’s books!

Books in the home are the single biggest predictor of academic success – yet more than half of our country’s low-income children do not own a single book, setting them up to struggle in school and to perpetuate the cycle of poverty.

The books we collect will be donated to Books on Break, a program to enable Durham’s low-income children to select up to ten books to take home and keep at the end of the school year.  These books will help arrest the summer slide that plagues low-income children and that contributes to the achievement gap.

There are a few easy ways to participate:

• Between now and May 15^th, simply drop your book donations in the specially marked bins located at RTP Headquarters, 12 Davis Drive (and at the Food Truck Rodeo on the 19^th).  Your company may be hosting drop off bins as well.

• If you don’t have gently used books at home to donate, please consider purchasing new books.  To make it even easier, buy books from Books on Break’s Amazon wish list and have them shipped directly to the RTP Headquarters:  http://amzn.com/w/1HQGXBNUBPF0X
  OR
  Stop by the Regulator Bookshop on Ninth Street in Durham and purchase a new book to donate to Books on Break; you’ll receive a 20% discount.

We need books for elementary school children (1^st through 6^th grade), from picture books to chapter books.  And we are grateful for both new books and gently used books that your kids may have outgrown.

Books on Break is a joint project of Community Outreach@rtp (a committee of the RTP Owners and Tenants Assocation), Book Harvest and Durham Public Schools.

Bring your friends, bring your colleagues and come join us  for the last Food Truck Rodeo of 2011! The December Food Truck Rodeo & Food Drive is this Thursday, December 15th at RTP Headquarters from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM. Participating food trucks are: Pie Pushers, Only Burger, Chirba Chirba, and an additional food truck to be announced shortly. Tables & chairs will be set up inside of the RTP Conference Center so everyone can enjoy their meal and escape the chill outside. As always, parking is very limited so we strongly encourage carpooling or using our recently re-paved pedestrian trails.  Don’t forget to bring a donation for the food drive  to receive a ticket good for $1 off at any of the participating food trucks.  

In the spirit of giving during the holidays, we’d like for the RTP Community to take this opportunity to give back to those that are less fortunate.  Community Outreach@rtp would like to encourage all Food Truck Rodeo patrons to bring a donation for the for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern Carolina.

The Food Bank serves a network of more than 800 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and programs for children and adults through warehouses in Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Raleigh, the Sandhills (Southern Pines) and Wilmington.  Some of the specific items that they are in need of include: baby products, hygiene items, paper products, and kid friendly items such as granola bars, popcorn, and graham crackers. A comprehensive list of most needed items is available here.

The November Food Truck Rodeo & Food Drive happened to fall on one of the coldest, rainiest days in November.  We are very thankful for those of you that came out and braved the cold & rain.  Based on the current forecast, this coming Thursday is shaping up to be a beautiful day and not too wintry or rainy, so we are looking forward to seeing everyone at RTP HQ for a great meal & to do some good.

We at the Research Triangle Foundation have been thrilled with the success of the past two food truck rodeos and are excited to announce that the  RTP Food Truck Rodeo will return to RTP Headquarters at 12 Davis Drive.

Participating food trucks are: Pie Pushers, Only Burger, Chirba Chirba, Chick-N-Que and The Parlour. 

Tables & chairs will be provided again so all can relax and enjoy what we hope will be a beautiful (and not too chilly) fall day.

RTP Food Truck Rodeo is BACK!

The first RTP Food Truck Rodeo was a great success, and are excited that we are going to make this next one even bigger & better.  We listened to your comments and the message was clear – we love having food trucks in RTP, we want to make it a regular event, and we want more trucks!  Your wish is our command.

In addition to the trucks that were at the first RTP Food Truck Rodeo, Pie Pushers Pizza Truck, Chirba Chirba Dumpling Truck, and The Parlour Ice Cream Truck, we’re are excited to announce that we will be adding two new trucks to the lineup: the always popular Only Burger and Blue Sky Dining Comfort Food & Sandwiches.

We are also going to bring in some tables & chairs so everyone can relax and enjoy what is sure to be one of those beautiful North Carolina fall days.  Bring your picnic blankets & camping chairs too!

A big huge thank you to all that joined us at RTP Headquarters for the first ever RTP Food Truck Rodeo with the Pie Pushers Pizza Truck, the Chirba Chirba Dumpling Truck and The Parlour Ice Cream Truck.  We were testing out an idea that we thought would be fun and to see if RTP employees would be interested, and turns out it was a HIT with over 200 people from companies all over RTP!

We had a much larger crowd than we (and the food trucks!) anticipated, so we are definitely planning on making the RTP Food Truck Rodeo a monthly event, at least as long as the weather holds out.

The next RTP Food Truck Rodeo is scheduled for Thursday, October 20th from 11:30 AM -1:30 PM and we are planning on making it even bigger & better than the last one with at least two more food trucks, picnic tables, and more!
