International fame. The cover of TIME magazine. A global brand. Busloads of adoring fans that fly in from Beijing, Kazakhstan, Peru – on the regular.
Nope, it’s not Justin Bieber.
It’s RTP — one of the world’s first research parks.
On the surface, the Research Triangle Park (RTP) might not seem like the sexiest of subjects. But it’s a legacy built from the back pockets of North Carolinians just like you and me.
It belongs to us.
And fifty-odd years later, it is still managed by the same private Foundation created all those years ago by Gov. Luther Hodges and Archie K. Davis.
RTP has been called many things by the people of North Carolina. “Ivory tower.” “White castle.” “Rallying point.” “Fulcrum.” Read in to that language a bit, and you’ll come away with this: RTP is a centrifugal force in the community. But with that prominent reputation comes an association of austerity.
That sort of perceived elitism is damaging – and highly divisive.
Our world is in an era where even the highest seats in the land are striving to be more accessible; more approachable. President Obama is doing AMAs on Reddit – and his office is penning petition rejections in truly stellar form. (https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/response/isnt-petition-response-youre-looking).
It is time for RTP to move forward in to this new world. No longer tower-pent, the Park is here — it is listening. And its staff (including CEO @BobGeolas) is conversing with the greater Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill communities.
The Park is in the process of building something truly colossal in its heart. A new legacy — for all of us.
But key to its success is its ability to network with members of the community; from the scholars of our universities, to the students, to the chambers of commerce, to the government officials, to the activists – to everyday citizens.
Yes. You can help.
Know someone doing innovative things in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill (or elsewhere in North Carolina)? Get them talking about it – on the “Tweeter” – and have them tag us if they want a RT (@TheRTP).
While you’re at it, get those cool kids up on Instagram if they’re not already there.
The Research Triangle Park is watching. ReTweeting. Responding. It’s actively using its global brand to network with international publications, the companies within its borders, VC groups, community evangelists and world influencers.
RTP wants to help share what it is that North Carolina is capable of; but it’s you and your accomplishments that are the content.
The Park’s headquarters showcases anything Tweeted at @TheRTP on large screens in its lobby.
Together, we can keep those screens scrolling.
TLDR (A Summary of the Above)
Have an exciting new project? A new discovery? Some research you want to share?
Talk to us. We’re out from the ivory tower.
We’re right here.
(Hopefully that doesn’t sound too ominous)…
